With so many fresh denim styles to try this fall, like cropped flares and vintage-inspired mid-rise cuts, where do you even start the hunt for the perfect blues? FLARE enlisted my help to round up my 5 fave pairs at the best places to buy jeans in Toronto. Here you’ll find 5 of my favourite denim shops in #the6ix, with the best selection (and as many Canadian/Toronto-made options as possible), so, now you at least know where to start, and the only question left is: how many pairs is too many? Answer: you can never have too many pairs of denim, duh!!
Blue Button Shop
Where: 1499 Dundas St. W., bluebuttonshop.com
Atmosphere: Blue Button Shop is a cool contemporary boutique on the Dundas West Strip, inspired by owner Tamae Miyazaki’s time living in Japan. The store’s atmosphere reflects the shop’s belief in providing a comfortable and fashionable place for people to find what they like, and what makes them look (and feel) good. This is the go-to spot for serious denim nerds to geek out over the selection of Japanese duds.
Brands: Digawel, orSlow and Kapital for women plus a larger selection of 12 to 15 brands for men
Fave pieces for fall: Look out for an expansion of their denim stock with more raw and selvedged Japanese options for both ladies and men as the weather gets cooler. Right now I’m loving the wider, relaxed cuts from orSlow and Digawel.
Average price for a pair: Around $280, with a range between $250 and $600
Services: Tamae and her team understand that finding the perfect pair of jeans is not easy and they’re there to help clients through that journey by sharing their vast knowledge of all things denim.
IRIS Denim
Where: Online at irisdenim.com and at Parkdale’s The Future of Frances Watson, 1390 Queen St. W.
Atmosphere: A clean and simple website that’s straight to the point and lets you easily shop their Canadian-made, high-cut skinny jeans that are made for “actual woman bodies!”
Brands: Their own label, IRIS Denim, that’s designed in Toronto and made in Quebec. Yes to girls making jeans in Canada!
Fave pieces for fall: I’m looking out for the new ‘Whatta Man’ style that brings the tired old boyfriend jean to the next level with a high waist, looser fit and cropped hem in a light wash non-stretch denim.
Average price for a pair: Around $197
Services: Aside from providing awesome Canadian-made denim for women, by women, the “extra services” offered through their site are limited at this time, but are sure to grow as the company does.
Dutil
Where: 704 Queen St. W., dutildenim.com
Atmosphere: The vibe at Dutil is super laid-back and walking in, the first thing you notice is walls of denim (they stock over 25 different brands!). Plus, everything is organized which makes sifting through SO MUCH a little easier.
Brands: Neuw, Rag & Bone, APC, Cheap Monday, BLK DNM, Ksubi and more including their super successful in-house brand, Dutil
Fave pieces for fall: Fall stock hasn’t hit the store (yet) and they’re keeping what’s coming on the DL, but you can expect to salivate over styles from Rag & Bone and APC.
Average price for a pair: Around $170
Services: Dutil offers in-house tailoring and repairs to their denim as well as special care instructions for their raw and washed offerings.
TNT Yorkville Village
Where: 87 Avenue Rd., tntfashion.ca
Atmosphere: A sleek environment with upbeat music that moves you around the store. Denim is displayed on almost every table and is organized by brand to make it easy to find.
Brands: Citizens of Humanity, L’Agence, Rag & Bone, AG Jeans, J Brand, Current/Elliot, Frame, Mother Denim and so many more!
Fave piece for fall: I’m loving the Le High Flare Jeans from Frame ($282), which have a high rise and kick flare that is so of-the-moment.
Average price for a pair: Around $200-300
Services: TNT offers tailoring and personal shopping appointments. Their sales associates are so knowledgeable about the fit and cut of each piece of denim that you’ll want one of them looking out for you!
GotStyle Distillery
Where: 21 Trinity St., gotstyle.ca
Atmosphere: Large, luxe and the perfect place to shop with your man to make you both happy. GotStyle’s boasts a solid selection of wardrobe staples mixed with trendy seasonal pieces to up your style game whether you’re heading to brunch, a job interview or a chic party.
Brands: Paige, DL 1961, Levi’s and Cheap Monday for women, Nudie Jeans, DL 1961, John Varvatos and Neuw Denim for men
Fave piece for fall: Paige’s 1970s-inspired Margot High Rise skinny jean ($230)—already a favourite of Kendall Jenner and her girl squad—is on my wishlist.
Average price for a pair: Around $250
Services: The store carries a wide selection of fits and washes that range between size 24-32 to accommodate most body types. The boutique environment also provides hands-on service for the best help when it comes to finding the perfect pair of jeans.
