Since my #GCfit challenge kicked off at the start of March, I’ve made a number of positive changes to my daily habits that I’ve grown to love, and rely on. One of them is the Glowing Green Smoothie that I now drink every single day. It is basically like drinking a giant salad first thing in the morning, and, while that may sound a bit weird, I can assure that it’s like drinking the tallest, most refreshing glass of water you’ve ever had in your life. I’m quite certain that I’m now a full-blown Glowing Green Smoothie addict!

I used to think that making this kind of thing required way too many ingredients and was far too time-consuming to be manageable as an everyday breakfast. Well, I was right, and I was wrong. There are A LOT of ingredients and it costs a pretty penny (here in Toronto anyway) to buy everything you need, especially if you’re buying organic. It is also a bit time-consuming but I’ve found you get faster as you get used to making them, and a great thing is they can last 2-3 days in your fridge so I tend to make them in advance. I seriously would not be this dedicated to the GGS if I didn’t think it so awesome, and a total game-changer when it comes to my skin, health, weight and overall happiness!

Since I love sharing things that I’m really excited about I wanted to post my recipe for the Glowing Green Smoothie in hopes that you will give it a try and see how it can change your life for the better. A life-changing green drink? Really? I know, but I’m serious! It’s amazing. Even my burger-loving boyfriend regularly asks for a jar of GGS for himself.

Keep reading to find out how you can make your own at home!

Gracie’s Glowing Green Smoothie Recipe:

What You Need:

- half a lemon

- 2 stalks of celery

- a large, long chunk of cucumber

- 1-2 cups of lettuce

- 1-2 cups of spinach

- half a green apple

- 1 inch piece of fresh ginger

- 2 cups ice cold purified water

The great thing about the Glowing Green Smoothie is that you can really play around with what goes in it – so long as you mainly stick to green vegetables and keep the fruit content low. This also tastes great with pear, banana (try a mix of pear, apple and banana if your body is okay with the sugar), and I especially love using arugula, kale, and fresh herbs such as parsley or coriander. The above is the main recipe I stick to, but I’ll also switch things up depending on what’s fresh and readily available to be used up in my fridge. I’ve also recently started using Alkaline water by a new Canadian company called Flow Water. It might sound weird but the water is so pure and fresh tasting that it really makes a difference when you make the GGS!

What To Do:

To make the GGS super smooth, I recommend using the best blender you can. Trust me, it makes a HUGE difference. I used to use my Magic Bullet which worked fairly well until it died. When I tried to make the GGS in our Ninja blender it literally turned out like a gross lumpy soup. Once the bullet died I decided to bite the bullet (no pun intended lol) and finally buy a Vitamix. All I can say is, HOLY CRAP THIS THING IS LIFE CHANGING! What the Vitamix can do makes what came out of the Magic Bullet look like a lumpy mess. This thing gets things SMOOTH and I love it. Honestly, it basically turns the GGS into a JUICE not a smoothie! Except you still get all of the benefits of keeping all of those healthy fibres that you need in your body.

Now, once you’ve got all of your ingredients ready to go, you’re ready to put them in your blender! There is an order to follow and here it is: water, lettuce, celery, cucumber, then fruit, the lemon juice. Why? I don’t know, I just do it because Kimberly Snyder says so. Apparently fruit takes less time to break down because of the sugars so you should break down the veggies first.

Once everything is in there blend away until you get it as smooth as possible. When it’s ready, poor it into your favourite glass, jar or portable bottle and enjoy! As mentioned early I often fill a couple of jars or bottles at a time so I’m covered for a couple of days.
