It’s safe to say that, after absolutely smashing Fashion Week last October with a drool-worthy Spring/Summer Collection, Mackage was the most anticipated show at this season’s Fashion Week in Toronto, and their 2015 f/w collection lived up to expectations. I sent contributing Editor Michelle Pinchev of City By Heart backstage to catch up with the Canadian design duo (Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan) after the show. Here’s what happened:

When I asked the Montreal design team behind Mackage to tell me about the inspiration behind their stunning collection, Eran’s response was clear and concise: “Polar Vortex,” he said, without a moment’s hesitation.

During the Mackage F/W15 show, the models hit the runway against a backdrop of what looked like an arctic landscape, constructed in cool grays that set the tone and palette of the show. But as the designers point out, outerwear means many different things depending on what country you live in.

“We’re becoming more international, so when we designed this collection, we kind of designed it at a few levels,” Eran said. “It’s for different types of winters in different countries. For Canada, the big down jackets are extremely warm. In Europe, we have the lighter weight downs.”

Inspired by winter conditions around the western hemisphere, Mackage showed us once again that you can dress warm and practically without forsaking style or luxury. As Canadians know all too well, it can be hard to feel glamorous in a puffer coat. Yet Mackage’s luxe touches make it seem cool and effortless.

For instance, one of the recurring themes in their collection was fringe – gorgeous, supple, leather fringe. On scarves, coats, leather jackets, dresses. According to Mackage, fringe is in.

“I think there’s a return to glam and it just makes everything look cool so we added fringe on scarves,” said Elisa. “You can have your coat and throw on the scarf and it just gives a different feel to it, and embellishes it. I think that we’ve had this ‘I don’t care’ look for a while and now I think there’s a return to femininity and glamour.”
