Did you know that World Oceans Day has been celebrated internationally since 1992? Around the world, people come together to act for the ocean’s future in a big way. This year alone, there are more than 400 events in 70 different countries taking place to support World Oceans Day, which is happening on June 8th, 2014!

For World Oceans Day 2014, Biotherm Water Lovers (Biotherm‘s global platform devoted to the protection and preservation of the world’s water) will raise funds for one of Mission Blue‘s (their long-term international partner) 50 current Hope Spots. This year the focus will be on the Galapagos Islands, where the ocean is still under major ecological stress.

The protection of our oceans should be a great concern for all of us, and if it takes a day like World Oceans Day to remind us, then so be it. As part of their initiative, this year Biotherm is calling for beautiful photo submissions inspired the theme “Water Lovers“. For every thematic water photo posted to the Biotherm Canada Facebook Page all week starting June 8th, Biotherm Water Lovers will donate $1 to Mission blue. The photos posted will be curated in their online image gallery celebrating water from all over the world.

World Oceans Day and Biotherm‘s call for “Water Lovers” photographs instantly had me thinking of my time spent on the island of Lanzarote in Spain with my family in February. It’s hard to imagine being somewhere so beautiful, and where the water is so powerful, and not being able to enjoy it close up, or from afar.

Here are a few of my favourite images from the trip the showcase the beautiful surroundings and, mainly, the ocean. Keep in mind these were shot with my only my iphone!

Now, don’t feel like you have to submit an image from a tropical vacation just to take part in Biotherm‘s call for “Water Lovers” pictures because it can be anything that shows a love for water, weather it’s a city river or a cottage lake. And how can you not love water? We need it to live! Adding to that, when was the last time that a picture you posted raise a $1 for charity?
