September will forever remind me of heading back-to-school. The crisp fall air, turning leaves, and sound of school bells as students file in and out. Even though my years at school have been over for quite some time now, I can’t help but feel the excitement of fall and a new “school year” once September comes around.
Perhaps that’s why my outfits always tend to get a little bit preppier around now. Striped sweaters, collared shirts, and flirty skirts (especially paired together) always seem to make a major comeback in my style, and it’s always welcomed with open arms.
Of course there are ways to pull inspiration from a traditional school uniform without looking like, well, you’re actually going back to school. For this look, I replaced the standard white Oxford shirt for a basic long sleeve white cotton crew neck t-shirt instead. Not only is it comfier, but it tones down the ‘prep’ factor and makes it easier to layer without causing bulkiness.
Personally I’m a fanatic for stripes, but find the classic white and navy can tend to look too casual during the work week. This cosy knit version in a soft oatmeal palette allows me to pull off stripes (without looking too nautical) in a look that’s perfectly suited for day-to-night events on a Monday, or a Friday.
Last but not least the right skirt is key. Some thing short (but not too short) and flirty, but ideally without the pleats. Again, it’s taking the look a little too literally. Instead, try something pretty and loose like a chiffon skirt to complete the look.
Even if you’re not really hitting the books this fall, an inspired look can have you feeling like you’re going back to school, in a good way.
