In Joanie’s second favourite room, The Puncheon Room, a wall of incomparable paintings by the likes of McClelland Barclay and James Montgomery Flagg welcomes its guests. The Captain tells them much of the artwork here was acquired by ‘21’ during the Great Depression, when customers with sizable bar tabs traded in valuable works (see the Remington Room, where one of the largest private collections of artist Frederic Remington’s works is housed), in exchange for clearing the balance of their house account. Joanie imagines her parent’s own original Damien Hirst hanging in the room. She reconsiders…household gloss paint and credit card on canvas would clash with Barclay’s pin-up art.

Walking through the Bar Room, where Joanie and friends learn that President John F. Kennedy donated one of the hundreds of toys hanging from the iconic ceiling of the Bar, the girls pause to imagine being the next Jackie O … perhaps her Vera Meat duster ring would not be appropriate for the inauguration ceremony, though it is the envy of all the girls.

Envy … how Joanie envies the women who are already grown up and able to dine at ‘21’ before a night at the theatre, dressed in pretty cocktail frocks, escorted by dashing gentlemen looking dapper in their suits and ties. One day she will be one of them. She’ll wear Marchesa, and her date will look nothing like a Jonas Brother … not even the oldest. Her date will look statelier than that. Someday … someday when Joanie is grown up …
