Daring and eloquent, womenswear designer Caitlin Power’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection embraces the strength of femininity. Using structured figure forming silhouettes and sheer fabrics with dramatic blocking patterns, Power’s highlights a line of separates designed with domination on the mind.
The classic tailoring of pieces including a charcoal cape with leather collar and a luminous shorts suit — carried over from Spring/Summer 2013’s must-have list — make for enduring wardrobe staples, while the designer’s geometric shaped cocktail dresses feature the leather detailing topping the runway trends for the upcoming Fall/Winter season.
When contemplating a bold and dramatic collection of clothing such as Power’s, a conversation with former-model-turned-actress, Julia Voth, is a well-paired delight.
Cast as the resident love interest in Citytv’s upcoming comedy Package Deal, Voth is the beauty that threatens to come between three adoring brothers Sheldon (Harland Williams), Ryan (Jay Malone) and Danny (Randal Edwards), the latter brother being the lucky man her character Kim Mattingly begins the series dating.
A native of Saskatchewan, Canadian audiences will have the chance to better familiarize themselves with the talents of the gorgeous ex-pat (Voth currently resides in Los Angeles) when her series begins May 6th. Until then, learn more about the actress through our World MasterCard Fashion Week questionnaire, and find out what’s behind Voth’s personal style and what she loves about Power’s designs.
RATE THE IMPORTANCE OF FASHION IN YOUR LIFE.
Clothes are a way of expression, and being an artist you are always finding ways to show what you feel. So it’s safe to say I definitely dress for my mood. And nothing makes a girl happier than finding an amazing piece that can change how you feel. When you feel confident in what you’re wearing, you’ll hold your head a little higher, and that’s the power of fashion.
BASED ON WHAT YOU’VE SEEN TONIGHT. WHAT DO YOU PREDICT TO BE THE BIGGEST TREND TO HIT THE STREETS NEXT SEASON?
I hope the leather jackets with the combination of leather and cloth paired with the sheer blouses will be everywhere. It’s appropriate for Spring weather and very sexy and feminine. I also love seeing all the high waisted pants. I think they add a touch of chicness, and can be worn during office hours and still look great at night with a great pair of flats or heels.
DO YOU THINK YOU’LL INCORPORATE THIS TREND INTO YOUR OWN WARDROBE?
I loved the structured tops and dresses with metallic and leather accents! The angled cap-sleeves are to die for and are always flattering on everyone. Once again she used a combo of sheer, leather, and textured materials that make the piece stand on its own. It’s bold and I love that.
ARE YOU MORE OF A TREND PERSON OR A STAPLES PERSON?
I’m more or a staples person for sure. I love my tanks, and tees, flowy tops and leather jackets, and I mix and match them with different things. I have my own style, and I know what makes me feel and look my best. Of course, if I love when something very trendy comes out, and I’ll work it in to my look and make it my own, but overall my style’s an evolution, not a race.
WHAT IS THE MOST GLAMOROUS PIECE IN YOUR CLOSET AND WHAT IS THE MOST COZY?
I think my most extravagant thing is my collection of vintage clothes. I have a few great ’50s housewife dresses and a bathing suit. I’ve worn the bathing suit out before as a top, it’s incredible! But, the most comfy thing in my closet right now would be an old cashmere sweater that was given to me a long time ago. It’s so soft, and I’ll just throw it on around the house.
IF YOU COULD TAKE ONE PIECE FROM THE RUNWAY WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Either one of the tops or dresses I mentioned above. They’re both so my style. Sexy while not showing too much skin, and not super flashy, even though you’re still guaranteed to stand out. Also, I love when a woman shows off her curves, those pieces are made to show the curves you want and hide the ones you don’t want to show.
IF YOU COULD WATCH TONIGHT’S SHOW WITH ANY CELEBRITY, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Halle Berry. Caitlin’s show reminded me of her style and some of the things she wears.
WHAT SONG WOULD YOU CHOOSE AS THE RUNWAY SOUNDTRACK TO THIS COLLECTION?
“Reckoner” by Radiohead was my first instinct and I’m sticking to it! The song’s rhythm and evocative vocals fit the deep colors and rich materials used in the collection. Music is such a powerful tool in creating a mood and feeling, I think this song would match the story of this collection.
WHO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON TO IMPRESS AT FASHION WEEK?
If I were a designer, I think I would have to impress the buyers and editors. It’s important that to make clothes that will make your customers feel and look good.
WHAT WAS THE SINGLE ELEMENT ABOUT THIS FASHION WEEK THAT IMPRESSED YOU MOST, ON OR OFF RUNWAY?
I’m so impressed by all the Canadian talent out there! We all know we come from a country full of very talented people in all aspects of art and entertainment, but it is so good to see firsthand what we have to share with the world and what we have created.
