After a long winter, the time to step out of clunky snow boots and slip into spring 2014’s preferred platforms, has finally arrived.
Start clearing out your closets ladies; below, a roundup of this season’s top trends to help kick your spring cleaning into gear and facilitate a touch of glorious restocking.
Tribal prints for spring is quickly becoming as groundbreaking as seeing florals. But alas, here are they are again. The difference this time around? Think bigger and bolder abstract graphics within a completely mismatched print-on-print ensemble as seen on the runway at Céline. Even the house of Valentino, with its zeal for the girly and the frilly, sent models down the runway in rich-looking ethnic brocade. If looking to incorporate the tribal trend into a more wearable work wardrobe, look to Dries Van Noten for “notes” on how to add in the perfect pop of tapestry in an otherwise tapered look. The most refreshing interpretation of the trend? Alexander McQueen‘s bold and almost mod-inspired take on on the powerful prints, which translates into a modern look that could be worn straight off of the runway.
If you’ve never been able to quite let go of Tom Cruise’s most infamous fashion statement (you know, the one that consisted of just a pair of socks and an oxford shirt) then you’re in luck. Forget wearing your boyfriend’s shirt, the shirt itself has seen a total makeover. This season, it’s been re-worked for the woman’s body — about time. Just look to Altuzarra to see how jaw-droopingly sexy a “shirt dress” really can be…when worn Joseph style, that is. And, for the traditionalists still smitten with that just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-put-on-my-boyfriend’s-shirt kinda look, you can literally now wear just that, and even throw in the boxers thanks to Alexander Wang. More of a DIY type? Do as No. 21 does and stitch some embellishment onto the bottom of an oversized shirt, put it on, add a pair of heels and call it a day, or a night out.
Remember when Lady Gaga turned herself into a real life Picasso painting while in London back in December? In case you missed it, Buzzfeed may have done the best job in capturing this “unique” new look of Gaga’s, which they described as what would happen “if Boy George and Picasso had a baby.” While we can appreciate Mother Monster’s enthusiasm for fine art, it’s best to relax the gung-ho art school kid vibe and take a cue from the likes of Chanel, Prada and Louis Vuitton instead. And while it doesn’t really matter which painter/art movement counts as your favourite when choosing your gallery-inspired look, we recommend sticking within the abstract, cubist, and surreal bunch to stay on trend.
Does extraterrestrial life really walk among us? According to the SS14 trends, yes. With the intergalactic sheen of lamé topping the season’s preferred materials list, don’t be surprised if you have people doing double takes this spring should you be trying on the trend, especially if you’re wearing one of Lanvin‘s head-to-toe lamé ensembles. Sure it may closely resemble a real-life space suit, but if Albert says it’s chic, than it must be so, non? Realistically, if the trend is a bit full on for you, have no fear, there are less look-at-me options available to peruse. Ease into the scintillating trend with a lamé panelled pleated mini as seen at Proenza Schouler. Jacket, skirt, dress, gold or silver, anything alien/astronaut-inspired goes this spring.
Sure, sportswear has been big amongst the street style set for quite some time now, but this season, even some of the glitziest and glammest designers have gone athletic. At Gucci, we saw black mesh oversized tops that brought to mind images of ska punk princess Gwen Stefani during her Rock Steady era. Then there was Stella McCartney, who showed an oversized rose gold baseball jacket, paired with her take on the classic, well…gym shower shoes. And did we mention Marni? Their SS14 show was a lesson in how to go sporty for maximalists, the type who can’t bare to part from their beloved embellishments. By the way, you, like us, definitely want to put one of Marni’s bedazzled visors on your summer wish list.
