Fashion and ballet go hand-in-hand, a truth The National Ballet of Canada’s newest dancer, Evan McKie, knows well judging from his dapper personal style. Like the crowd he runs in, which includes friends Cameron Silver (“King of Vintage”) and fashion “it girl” Dita Von Teese; McKie looks the part of a regular at Paris and New York Fashion Week.
A Principal Dancer in Residence—by way of the Stuttgart Ballet, the world renowned German ballet company—McKie wears clothes as well as he commands the audience’s attention when performing on stage, wielding a potent mix of charisma and bygone gentlemanly graces. So, exactly the sort of person you want sat next to you at Fashion Week.
For a man whose career centres around fluidity and movement, Rudsak seemed like a label that might speak to his tastes, hence our invite for McKie to join us at the show.
Light and breezy is the mandate for Rudsak’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection. From the line’s flowy floor grazing white zip-up dress (which truly looks skydiving-ready) to its edgy leather biker vest and midi skirt combo—a twirl-worthy pairing that softens the look—Rudsak evidently has motion on the mind.
Below, McKie takes a break from his busy rehearsal schedule—he makes his debut as Peter/The Nutcracker in this year production of The Nutcracker (performing December 21st, 23rd and 27th)—to share his impressions of Rudsak’s latest collection.
RATE THE IMPORTANCE OF FASHION IN YOUR LIFE. (10 BEING FOOD I.E. NECESSARY TO LIFE.)
Personal style of moving, dancing, dressing and thinking is important to me.
BASED ON WHAT YOU’VE SEEN AT THE SHOW, WHAT DO YOU PREDICT TO BE THE BIGGEST TREND TO HIT THE STREETS NEXT SEASON?
Materials that you can actually pack and wear straight off the plane!
ARE YOU MORE A TREND PERSON OR A STAPLES PERSON?
I think it’s good when new ideas and materials start trending and creating a new look. The best quality clothes are really the things that stay with us year after year though. I’m willing to invest in things that offer that level of quality.
WHAT IS THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT PIECE IN YOUR CLOSET AND WHAT IS THE MOST COZY?
My favorite boxer briefs.
IF YOU COULD TAKE ONE PIECE FROM THE RUNWAY HOME WITH YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
If Rudsak would make a men’s blazer version of that amazing white dress—what was that material?—I would be the first to wear it. The material looks like it could be worn in a lot of situations and climates! And I’m into the bags too.
WHAT SONG BEST SUMS UP THE CURRENT COLLECTION?
Daft Punk’s “Around the World”.
WHO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON TO IMPRESS AT FASHION WEEK?
Hopefully one finds his/her own self impressed!
WHAT WAS THE SINGLE ELEMENT ABOUT YOUR FASHION WEEK EXPERIENCE THAT IMPRESSED YOU MOST, ON OR OFF THE RUNWAY?
Fashion Blows at The Room at Hudson’s Bay Queen Street.
