The journey towards Sundance has begun! This morning I awoke in California and after a sleepy plane ride landed in the snowy land of Utah.
As it’s my first time here, I can’t help but stare at the mighty magnificent snow covered mountains. There’s something so other-worldly about these giant beasts of nature. I almost believe I’m in the Lord of the Rings, traveling with a fellowship on a great and ominous adventure. I am on a very similar journey — minus the danger and the battle against good and evil….but, hey! Who wants that?
I’m traveling with a fellowship of musicians: the band Raining Jane (of which I have stolen the guitarist Chaska Potter & Percussionist Mona Tavakoli and lured them into playing in my band as well) and my dad, David Schwartz, who is a television/film composer and bassist — also a member of my band. If I’m really getting into this Lord of the Rings analogy, I would have to say that Mona would be Sam (my rock), Chaska would be Merry (my buddy), and Dad would be Gandalf (so wise!).
Tonight, The Low Anthem, Raining Jane and my own band, creatively named “Lucy Schwartz“, are all playing a concert for TheHouse.Org at a Salt Lake City venue called The Depot. My favorite part of this venue is that it is filled wall to wall with couches. I strongly believe the world would be a better place if all rooms were filled with couches — why fight when you can sit down on a couch and relax? Right? (Vote Lucy Schwartz for President 2012 and your world will be filled with couches!)
Tomorrow we will reach our final destination. In Lord of The Rings this would be Mordor: a land of fire, guarded by hundreds of evil warriors and teeming with certain danger. For us, it is Sundance: a land of film executives and fun movies!!! Okay, okay, it is not going to be as epic as a Lord of The Rings adventure, but it will be a more enjoyable adventure for the main characters experiencing it, and since I am the main character in my journal, I am okay with that.
I’m excited to see what Sundance will be like. There are so many creative minds squashed into a tiny space that its bound to be inspiring! Can’t wait to see the films, meet the people, walk the walk, and talk the talk. Also, very excited to be playing the BMI Snowball Concert with David Poe, Allen Stone, Brett Dennen, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band!
Until tomorrow,
Lucy Schwartz aka “Frodo Baggins”
