Maybe it’s a sign that I’m getting older, but lately there is little that brings me more joy than shopping at a high-end grocery store. Perhaps not as much joy as shopping at Chanel, but buying fancy foods is certainly a lot more affordable to indulge in on a regular basis.
Surprisingly, the latest shop to tickle my fancy is an independent grocery store that’s located all the way in Markham. Operating since 1967, Michael-Angelo’s Supermarket is an award-winning family business that recently unveiled its stunning new “neighbourhood” concept shop that combines fabulous modern design with an old world experience.
As someone who rarely leaves the downtown core of Toronto, you know it’s gotta be really good for me to recommend a trip to Markham to do your groceries. But trust me, this is really worth it. Also, Michael-Angelo’s prices appear to be cheaper than average supermarkets in downtown which I will chalk up to being located outside of city.
Aside from the beautiful interior and great selection on offer, I love that this old-school family business truly understands how to cater to today’s modern person and family. For example, there is always a vast array of fresh in-house made foods to choose from for grab-and-go options that are still healthy and have homemade quality. My personal favourites included taking home a fresh stone baked pizza that was hot out of the oven, along with a jar of fresh tomato sauce, and pack of frozen pasta that was made in-house. Since I happened to be a little hungover on the Saturday morning that I visited, I was also very glad to grab a fresh juice from the cafe bar upon arrival, and take home a small box of piping hot pierogies for the ride home. For all of the cheese lovers out there, did I mention Michael-Angelo’s has a fresh mozzarella station that’s made in-house daily? Yes.
For anyone who enjoys surfing the web for recipe ideas as much as I do, you will also appreciate the shop’s great online site that is beautifully designed and offers numerous recipe ideas that look equally stylish and delicious.
Until Michael-Angelo’s opens up in downtown, make the trip out to Markham. You won’t regret it!
