8 beauty essentials i can't travel without to be camera ready

2015 has been a wild year, and one where I’ve found myself in front of the camera more than ever. As some of you may already know, I’ve spent a good portion of the year travelling to different cities to shoot the new travel web series by Air Transat and FLARE Magazine called Style Jaunt. And, of course, as FLARE Toronto Localist-at-Large, I also regularly appear on Breakfast Television to host the FLARE Localist segment once a month.

Now, as you can imagine, getting camera ready on your own can be hard enough, never mind the added challenge of doing so when you’re travelling, and/or limited to a very tight schedule. While packing, unpacking and packing up again for each new destination, I’ve realized that there are some key products I’ve come to rely on to help ensure I’m camera ready.

To be upfront, not everything thing you’ll find in my beauty essentials list has to do with makeup. In fact, none of it does in this round up. To me, getting camera ready – especially when travelling – starts way before any makeup is applied, and is all about proper skincare, de-stressing, and general maintenance.

See below for the 8 beauty essentials I rely on for a camera-ready travel experience!

1. A Truly Radiant Smile

Arm & Hammer Truly Radiant

Well before I’m due in front of the camera I make sure I’m using a great whitening toothpaste to ensure my pearly whites are on point before filming. I kid you not, my toothpaste is always what I pack first in my beauty bag to ensure I don’t forget it! I’m a big fan of using the A&H Truly Radiant Rejuvenating toothpaste because proven to whiten teeth in just 5 days, and often I don’t get much more notice than that before I have to get on a flight. Of course using a good toothbrush is imperative to ensure a deep clean – and even help remove stains and whiten teeth further. Packing the A&H Spinbrush is like travelling with an electric toothbrush minus the hassle!

2. Hydrated and Happy Skin

If you have perused my beauty section before, you’ll know just how important good skin, and a good skincare routine is to me. I’m a big fan of masks and my latest obsession is scaring the living daylights out of anyone who comes into contact with me while i’m rejuvenating my skin with a hydrating sheet mask. I’m sure you’ve seen these before, or perhaps have already tried one, these gooey thin sheets lay on top of your face like a mask (seriously, they even have creepy eye and mouth cut outs) for about 15-30 minutes and make you look horrifying until the minute you take them off to reveal gorgeous plump and happy skin. My current mask of choice is the Radford 24K Gold Bio Cellulose Mask which you can buy HERE.

3. Emergency Face Wipes

This is a product that never actually makes it into my suitcase, and that’s because I never walk onto a plane without it safely packed into my carry on purse. I love having good quality makeup wipes on hand to easily remove makeup on the plane or help feel a little refreshed after landing. They’re also great if need to clean your hands and you’re stuck between passengers. And as anyone who gets too tired to take off their makeup at night knows, these little guys make being responsible that much easier. Although I definitely don’t recommend relying on that every night! Right now brand of choice for wipes is THEFACESHOP and I love their Chia Seed fresh cleansing wipes.

4. Back Up Balms

Travelling and stress can often leave me with a tense neck that I can’t move. When this happens, there’s almost nothing I can do to hide that pain in my face – it is truly uncomfortable. When I’m travelling for work, I need to make sure that I’m ready to go at all times, and can’t get set back because of a muscle spasms. For this reason, I’ve always got the Muscle Rescue Balm by Ella’s Botanicals in my bag to soothe over any sore muscles after flying, or sleeping in a new bed.

5. A Powerful Overnight Mask

It’s safe to say that I’m little obsessed with masks, and especially love a good overnight mask. When it comes to long days of shooting and wearing extra camera makeup throughout, my skin is always in need of some serious R&R by the end. When I’m travelling I always pack a good overnight mask to help my skin recover along with the rest of my body when I’m sleeping. One of my personal favourites is the Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque by Dermalogica that also comes in travel-friendly packaging.

6. Travel Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy always help play a big party in my mood – whether it’s to help calm me down, or lift me up. I love travelling with On-the-Spot Aromatherapy by Aromacentric to help me out when I need it. An added bonus is that it smells so good I often use it as a perfume. For all available scents, click HERE.

7. A Natural Deodorant

In general, I’m very against using commercial deodorants and always opt to use the most natural option possible. When packing for a trip, I always ensure I’ve got a good natural deodorant packed because getting stuck without one get tricky – to be honest, it’s still not that easy to find a natural option at most stores. I love that this version by Love Fresh for Causemetics is unscented and small enough for travel, also $4 from every sale goes to the Breast Cancer Support Fund. Click HERE for more info.

6. Good Hair Products

When travelling, I never rely on the shampoo or conditioner that’s provided by the hotel. Seriously, you never know what you’ll get! There is the odd time when it’s a nice quality product, but most often it’s horrible and drying – not what your hair wants. Before I leave I always stock up on mini versions of my favourite hair products from Aveda to keep my strands happy and healthy while I’m away.

I hope these tips help you on your next trip!
