Our friend Byron Blum opened up this really awesome vintage shop right on Valencia street. Afterlife Boutique carries a lot of great stuff, but my favorite part is their selection of old concert T-shirts. I got an awesome Vanilla Ice “II The Extreme” shirt here… Byron is a musician too so it’s not surprising that the shop always has something good playing.

To be totally honest these days I buy the majority of my music through iTunes, but I love that my neighborhood has such a great record shop… Aquarius Records has been serving up music in every format available since 1970. For a small shop they carry a pretty large selection, and it’s always great to be able to go out and pick up a vinyl copy of something we may have worked on at the studio.

Home Sweet Home. This is where I can be found during any of the hours I’m awake… or asleep. Not only do i typically work 12+ hours recording the various bands who come through, but I also live upstairs on the third floor. Different Fur Studios was founded in 1968 (making it the oldest remaining studio in SF) and has seen the likes of Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Primus, and more recently The Morning Benders, A B & The Sea, Michael Franti, and Wallpaper.

Every guy needs a proper barber. I can of course shave my head myself, but there is something nostalgic and calming about a shave and a haircut with the hot towels, the rose water, and beard oil… at F.S.C. Barber (696 Valencia & 18th) you can get all that and even pick up some classic mens clothing as well.

We drink a lot of coffee in the studio, and when you drink a lot of coffee it needs to be good. Rodger’s Coffee offers up around 20 types beans for you to choose from and makes each cup individually and personalized. I prefer their “Heavy Rescue” (a tribute to San Franciscos firefighters) over ice with heavy cream and a little extra sugar…

Let me start by saying that Ian Marks and the crew at Beast & The Hare make their own charcuterie from scratch AND IT’S DELICIOUS. On this night they happened to be doing a wine pairing dinner with UNTI… i left completely full and a little bit tipsy, but totally happy. For the real real deal though, Sunday is fried chicken night and it comes served with a cornbread donut!

The Lexington Club is, as far as I’ve been told, San Franciscos only remaining Lesbian bar. So why would I hang out there you ask? Well, truthfully the bar is right next door to the studio where I live and work, but that’s not the only reason… The Lex is a great bar, a neighborhood bar, and has been a place where I’ve celebrated many great moments or drank away the bad ones, but mostly it’s the bar where I know I’ll always find my friends… and a shot of Herradura.

One of my favorite venues in SF is the Rickshaw Stop, they have a great medium sized room, friendly staff, and consistently book great bands. It’s the perfect mix of local and national acts… M.I.A. even introduced herself to me here once!

In between studio sessions I still spend the majority of my time with musicians. In order to celebrate the release of “In The Sunshine” by A B & The Sea, we decided to hit up Madrone Art Bar for their $2 Tuesday night live funk/soul and knock back some “Herbie Hancock” A wonderful vodka drink made with fresh watermelon. The band is great every Tuesday, but they would have to be with a front man whose name is actually Oscar Meyer.

After going out to a show I often grab a little food to soak up the Tequila. San Francisco has tons of food carts, but on the night of these pictures I happened to take part in some “pop-up late night bar food” from @FamilyMealSF. Originally from New Orleans, Terrell Brunet was serving up some tasty Gumbo after-hours at Bar Tartine and I was glad to get a bowl before it was gone.
